On 23 September 2018, the Austrian newspaper ‘derStandard’ published a full-page article dedicated to the social housing building located Manuel Benedikter, which is currently being renovated as part of the Sinfonia project.

In the article, the two architects in charge of the building refurbishment, Arch. Manuel Benedikter and Arch. Gerhard Kopeinig, explain the challenges they managed to overcome to make this building an example of sustainable renovation. The first success of this project was to allow tenants to stay home during the refurbishment. As a result, the works had to be organised accordingly to minimise the disturbances for the 72 families installed in the apartments. The replacement of the central gas heating system was also a big change for tenants, used to cook with their gas stoves.

The building itself, although built in the 1990s, also offered some challenges for the architects. Due to differences in windows’ heights and a bad sun exposure caused by the mountains surrounding the building, a tailor-made prefabricated façade including wood elements, requiring 15 different simulations to be carried out in order to reduce energy consumption to the essence.

The city of Bolzano invested approximately 70.000 euro for each apartment refurbished within this project. A sustainable investment, that will contribute in a sustainable manner to the reduction of energy poverty.

Via Passeggiata dei Castani is among the five refurbishment projects currently being implemented in Bolzano in the framework of the Sinfonia project.
