Nicosia, CY

Nicosia is the capital and largest city of Cyprus and has a population of approximately 220,000 inhabitants. Working towards the sustainable development of the city, the municipality adopted a sustainable development strategy in 2007, before joining the Covenant of Mayors in 2012. In this framework, the city committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020.

To achieve this objective, the municipality is planning to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings and street lighting, as well as to install energy-saving traffic lights and festive decorations. The municipality also intends to increase the share of renewable energy generation by setting up solar panels on the roofs of municipal buildings and parking areas. Additionally, Nicosia is currently implementing its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan that includes the replacement of the municipal fleet of buses with low-emission vehicles as well as the use of bicycles by the municipal police department.

As an active member of the Replication Cluster, the city of Nicosia will have the opportunity to share experiences on citizen engagement while exchanging knowledge on energy-efficient building refurbishment.
