Sliven, BG

The city of Sliven is located in the Eastern part of Bulgaria and has a population of approximately 112,000 inhabitants. To help develop a healthy environment in the city and to promote green development, the municipality of Sliven has committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% by 2020.

Since 2007, the municipality is implementing a programme to renovate municipal buildings towards greater energy-efficiency. Already in the city, three schools and ten kindergartens use solar energy, and one solar thermal system has also been installed in a hospital. In addition, several projects such as the energy-efficient refurbishment of nurseries and the implementation of innovative solutions for the renovation of several schools should be carried out in the coming years. To complete these efforts, the city intends to extend and modernise the district heating system. In view of decreasing the city’s CO2 emissions related to mobility, Sliven will also upgrade the public transport infrastructure.

In the Replication Cluster, Sliven will exchange knowledge with other European cities on energy-efficient solutions for smarter European cities and will have the opportunity to share views on innovative financing models for building renovation.
